American Beer Giant Budweiser Bought By Belgium Company

July 14th, 2008 | 6 Comments | Posted in Beer, Business, Daily Life, Entertainment, Lifestyle, alcohol

Look, I’m not one to drink Budweiser unless there’s just nothing else around. It tastes like pisswater and makes you feel full and bloated. It’s generally not the smoothest thing in the world.

But this morning on both NPR and WNOX Knoxville’s Talker I heard that they were bought in an almost 50 billion dollar deal with InBev, a Belgium-owned beverage company that produces Stella Artois. InBev claims that none of the US breweries will be shut down, and St. Louis, Missouri will still be the headquarters of the North American region of the company.

The big debacle seems to be that Budweiser, or Anheuser-Busch, is perceived as an all-American beer and by selling out to a foreign company, they’re somehow letting America down. This is also on the brink of the news that the SABMiller Corporation and Molson Coors Brewing will be merging their two U.S. corporations. The man on the radio this morning made a good point though - it’s all about doing what’s best for the shareholders. At the end of the day, they don’t care what America thinks about the deal because they’ve already gone home with the big pay check.

Another caller on the WNOX show stated that Budweiser was America, like apple pie or baseball games or Chevy, or beatin’ your kids with a belt, or living in a trailer… you get the point. I think what everyone is missing is that nothing’s really going to change. If you like Budwieser beer, keep drinking it. It’s going to keep on tasting the same. At the end of the day, the brew is still made in America, still made by American people, and still keeps workers in jobs. The big difference is the profits all go to Belgium.

If that bothers you, then stop drinking it. Support local microbreweries by drinking their brews instead. They probably taste better anyway. Or try out Sam Adams - they have a huge selection of flavors to choose from, and they’re as American and patriotic as it gets for big beer business.

Beer and the Man-Hug

Tvads_heineken_man_hug_300x206bIn Holland where Heineken is made, the saying is “Get the head right and the rest will follow,” a pun on the way the beer is served, with a large, frothy head. While I’m a dark beer drinker myself, my very first beer was a Heineken, which should show you how effective marketing can be. I never had a beer at parties or sporting events before that - my very first beer I had was my own choice, and I decided to try something that looked light and tasty, instead of dark and heavy.

If you’ve had too many beers though, you can be a little more friendly than you’d normally expect to be when you’re completely sober. If you’re already someone who’s not afraid to hug the same sex, it’s only going to be amplified when you’re tipsy. (Mom says the best way to avoid this is not to drink at all.)

Several European countries have social norms that make man-hugs a faux pas. I’d like to take a minute, and encourage my European readers to give a man-hug today, even if it’s a European Man Hug. A man hug is not effeminate or emasculating - it’s a powerful quick connecting of arms and a slap on the back that says “Hey, you’re a good guy, but I want no part with you, romantically speaking.” Check out this video below from Heineken:

My Buzz on Canadian Club

April 19th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Food, alcohol, consumer tips, free stuff

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a BzzAgent - which means I take part in consumer-driven word-of-mouth campaigns. We don’t get any kind of serious compensation except getting to try products for free or at a serious discount, or we get t-shirts or other cool stuff.

This week I received a Buzz kit in the mail containing a Canadian Club rocks glass, some print materials telling me about the whisky, and a medium women’s t-shirt that says “Damn Right Your Dad Drank It” with a picture of a white guy with an afro and two women. I thought it was a neat shirt, but there’s no way I can wear a women’s medium t-shirt. I guess that’s all they had left when I picked out my size earlier.

It also came with a rebate coupon for a 750ml bottle (a fifth) of any Canadian Club Whisky up to $11.99. So we went to the ABC store and purchased a bottle of the premium, which was 100 proof. Once we got it home and I tried it, I liked it. It’s kind of smooth, but with a strong bite like a good whisky should.

What is the difference, you might ask, between whisky and whiskey (with an “e”)? Whisky is made in Canada, and whiskey (with an “e”) is made in Ireland. I have tasted both, and I have to say I don’t have a preference between the two.

A huge part of Canadian Club’s advertising is geared towards younger males, it seems, with a focus on correcting the emasculation of male drinkers everywhere. All of the imagery reminds me of old family photos - but also some of them are of young men and women in what appears to be the 50’s and 60’s, like if your mom and dad had MySpace or Facebook available to them back then.

That being said, I don’t want to encourage anyone to drink if you aren’t already a drinker, but if you do drink, drink responsibly and with some common sense. Never drive drunk. Try this stuff out if you want, I don’t get anything out of it if you do, I just think it’s neat and worth mentioning.
