The Unit: One Awesome Show

May 16th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in DVD, Entertainment, tv

A year or so ago, I had borrowed “The Unit” Season 1 from my friend Nathan, and I really enjoyed the show. I never got past Season 1, because at the time that’s all there was out on DVD. Enter: Netflix. I’ve added all three seasons to my queue so far, but I think the third season isn’t out yet.

I have been re-watching the first season while my girlfriend-equivalent has gone home for a week or two, because I don’t really want to start a new show without her and have her show up and I’m stuck in the middle of it and her not knowing what’s going on.

It’s not so bad with this show, because it’s serialized but you can still watch any one episode and have a good idea of what’s going on. If you’ve never seen the show, the basic premise is that there’s an army black-ops group called “The Unit” with an official cover name of “The 303rd Logistical Studies Group.”

Everyone but the soldiers and their wives think the soldiers are in some sort of clerical job. In reality, they’re going out on deployment in the far reaches of the world, kicking butt and taking names. Check it out, they’ve already got seasons 1 and 2 on DVD.

French Filmmakers Test ‘Boundaries’ with Movie ‘Frontiers’

May 4th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in DVD, Daily Life, Entertainment, Lifestyle, movies

Coming soon to select theaters from French film company After Dark is a horror movie called “Frontiers(s)” that is supposed to rival blockbuster hits like “Saw” and “Hostel” in its goriness and suspense. The trailer is available to watch now at Frontiers Unrated Frontier(s). You have to enter the site and navigate almost all the way to the right to get to the even gorier unrated trailer.

My favorite thing about watching horror movies, since it’s hard to actually scare me when I’m watching a movie, is things that are almost feasible that make you cringe, such as torture or really shocking violent imagery. The kind of horror movies I can’t watch are the ones that depict some pain or torture just too horrible to picture myself enduring. It looks like this is a movie that might test that limit for me.

The trailer shows people being beaten, swung at with axes, one guy gets his Achilles tendon snipped by bolt cutters, and you see a guy with a table saw starting up the blades. The final image of the trailer before the title is just a woman with short hair screaming in agony.

The trailer on the main page is way less informative than the unrated one deeper in, so be sure and find it on the site. Also, this film is one of the few unrated films to actually make it to theaters. Most films get cut for theaters and then release an unrated version on DVD later.

What’s neat is this movie is only showing in a few select theaters starting May 9th, and just 4 days later on May 13th it comes out on DVD. If you can, I’d recommend seeing it in theaters first unless your home theater system is just awesome.

Free Rental Promo Codes for Red Box Movies

A couple days ago, I wrote about getting a free rental from a Red Box movie rental machine using a promo code I got when I signed up and gave them my e-mail. Those codes can be used once per credit card, so if you had a credit card and say, a check card with a credit card company logo on it, you could use that code twice.

But wait, that’s not the only way to get free rentals. A quick Google search will reveal that there are several sites out there that have promo codes listed for Red Box. However, the most comprehensive site I’ve found so far is InsideRedBox.com. They have a comprehensive list of codes that are categorized by states confirmed that the codes work in, along with the ability to report a code, and if you register on the site, you can even track the codes you’ve already used.

This past week I can personally verify that I was able to use the multiple credit card tip and the codes to rent 6 movies without paying a dime. If you have a Red Box machine in your area, check it out!

We Don’t Need No Water Let that DVD-R Burn!

January 15th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in CD, CD-R, DVD, DVD-R, Lifestyle, accessories, online shopping

Selling burnable optical media since 2002, SuperMediaStore.com has tons of blank CD and DVD media for sale at low prices. They are also a major reseller and wholesaler of digital media materials such as blank discs, the packing and storage cases, computer hardware, printer ink, toner cartridges, and jewel cases.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always burning DVDs and CDs for my music and movies. I seem to always have a spindle around, but that’s because I bargain shop and look for the lowest prices and then buy several spindles at once. The higher count of DVD or CD-Rs that you get in a cake spindle, the cheaper it usually is per disc is my experience. Nowadays with flash drives and external hard drives, you may also forget that blank optical media is still a viable additional data back-up avenue. So if you’re running low, check out SuperMediaStore.com and save on blank media and accessories.
