Grilled Cheese for Algernon

April 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Entertainment, Food, Health, Lifestyle, Tidbits

One of my best friends and colleague’s wife is a nutrition major at the university where I work, so she’s pretty crazy about how many carbs and nutrients are in what her friends and husband eat. She often makes neat sugar-free or low-carb snacks and sends them to work with her husband. I enjoy it because I’m diabetic and it’s not bad for me.

So it’s no surprise I thought of her when I saw this blog, Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Pickles (on low-carb bread, as the blog’s subtitle suggests). It’s the generic, run-of-the-mill daily blog you might expect to find in a blog community like SocialSpark. GCWP stands out with good recipes and low-carb food information to help you live a healthier, better life. Plus you get to read fun insights into someone’s life, which is always entertaining. Check it out.

Tuesday Turmoil

March 25th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Food, My Life, Tech Support, Work

It’s about 2:30pm as I write this at my desk, and I am kind of restless. I’m bored today. I have things to do but I really want to be entertained. I feel highly unproductive today, I think my meeting this morning ruined me.

Lots of crazy calls at the Help Desk, more people not following the directions in the letter that got sent out to our users about setting up their e-mail. We’ve been on this new system for more than 6 months now, and there are still users that haven’t bothered to login and change their password from the default.

So this girl I’ve been seeing, Kylara, she’s pretty awesome. I sometimes wonder why on earth she’s dating me, but then I just think about how I’m glad that she puts up with me. Things were kind of nervous and awkward at first, but still very good. Now things are even better, a lot of the awkwardness is gone, and we have a lot of fun and good times. It’s nice to have someone in your life that makes you happy this way.

I can get off work, go home, and then later go see her and it’s like the work day just melts away from me. I don’t have to tell her that I had a bad day or if I do, I don’t have to talk about it, and she’s okay with that.

She made spaghetti for me and my roommate last week. She likes that I think of her when I plan things like putting movies we both can watch in my Netflix queue. And tonight she made breakfast for dinner. I like her. I think I’ll keep her around.

Did you know Oysters could kill you?

March 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Health, Lifestyle, consumer tips, cooking

Two Gulf oysters are being prepared in a kitchen. One oyster says to the other “Boy, it sure is hot in this kitchen.” The other oyster looks at him and goes “AAAH! A TALKING OYSTER!”

But seriously folks. Oysters are no laughing matter. You could die. Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that resides in seawater, and could be transmitted to you through your dinner. If your dinner happens to be oysters, that is to say. “Normal people” are really in no serious risk of infection, but people who are at-risk include:

Liver Disease (from hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcoholism, or cancer)

Iron overload disease (hemochromatosis)

Diabetes

Cancer (including lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease)

Stomach Disorders

Or any illness or medical condition that weakens the body’s immune system

You can help avoid any unnecessary risk by eating post-harvest processed oysters, or just eating them fully cooked. Check out this website about being “Oyster Aware” for further information.

Spring Broke for Easter Break

I am so poor. Buying a Playstation 3 with your tax refund will do that to you, though. You better believe I’m bringing that bad boy to Mom’s house for Easter though. Yes sir, I will be sitting on the couch racking up some mad points on PAIN and relaxing to Everyday Shooter or working off some stress shooting people in the head on Call of Duty 4.

On the bright side, I only have to survive 8 days of poverty after I return from the trip to see my family for Easter and then it’s Pay Day. I’m hoping to bug Mom to buy me some groceries and hygiene products to get me by for the week when I get back. I’m really only out of a couple of essentials, and I don’t mind eating repeat meals for a few days in a row.

Mom, just so you know, I’m coming home not just for Easter, but also to mooch off your food and do laundry. I love you!

A Little Help From My Friends

March 17th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Beer, Daily Life, Entertainment, Food, Lifestyle, date

This weekend I went on a double date with some friends. Only instead of the norm, Ruff was my date and Kendall was Kylara’s date. I paid for my own food, because I’m a man. Ruff paid for his own food, because he’s a man. And Kylara got paid for by Kendall because she had some lottery money. Kylara dressed up really gorgeous, and occasionally flirted with me or smiled at me and pretty much drove me crazy because she wasn’t my date for the night. If her date had been Ruff I might have killed him.

One of the neat things about a man date (no, I’m not gay, just to disambiguate) is that you don’t have to talk. It’s not that I don’t like to talk - it’s just a guy understanding that just because I don’t talk doesn’t mean I’m mad at you or upset about something. Not all girls think that way, but men don’t even have to consider it.

Also, Golden Corral equals awesome. I haven’t been to one in a long time, but they basically bend Ryan’s over their knee and spank them profusely. Ryan’s is good, but oh sweet GC and their delicious steaks, shrimp, bourbon chicken, ribs, and other delectable foods that don’t taste like they’ve been sitting around unattended for hours. Ryan’s, you have a lot to learn about fresh and delicious food.

After we ate, we went to Books-a-million, which might be on its way to being my favorite store in Asheville. I got a small notebook to write quick notes and personal thoughts in when I’m away from a computer and my blog. Kylara continued to flirt with me and as we walked out of the store we saw Ruff and Kendall embracing and I jokingly called him a cheating bastard. Kylara was pretty much mine for the rest of the night.

Yesterday (Sunday), I played Super Smash Brothers Brawl, recently released for the Nintendo Wii. It was pretty awesome. I was a fan of it’s predecessor, Super Smash Brothers Melee on the Nintendo Gamecube system. I’m doing alright playing as Kirby or Pikachu, but most of my friends say playing those characters is cheating.

I finally got Call of Duty 4 into the Playstation 3 - I’ve been trying to find time to play it since I bought my Playstation 3. I only played through the tutorial a little bit, but it looks like it’s going to be a whole lot of fun. Several of my friends have said that it’s addictive to play, so I’m looking forward to getting into it some more.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone - enjoy it responsibly! I’ll post pictures of the green beer we make tonight later on.
