Futurama: Bender’s Big Score

December 15th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Futurama, movies, tv

I just finished watching the new Futurama movie - “Futurama: Bender’s Big Score” on DVD. We picked it up at the local movie rental store, and watched it after “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” (which was pretty funny).

If you’ve been a Futurama fan for as long as I and my friends have been, you’re going to love this movie. Like the Simpsons movie and the Stewie Griffin Story, there are plenty of references to things that happened throughout the show’s television run. Several time-traveling references tie together various episodes in what I like to call “Oooooooooh, yeah - I remember that. So that’s what happened!”

It’s hard to tell, watching the movie, if they planned it all out this way from the beginning, or if it’s just clever writing around existing storyline. Overall, I recommend this movie to anyone who’s ever enjoyed a good episode of Futurama. But I guess it’s probably more enjoyable if you’ve seen all the seasons.

Everybody’s Working for The Weekend

December 15th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Entertainment, Err., Huddle House, My Life, Weekend, sleep, tv

It’s Saturday - and thank you Jesus! This week has been crazy - I feel like I’ve been angry at every turn. My job requires me to be patient with the people I interact with (yours probably does too). The deal with anyone who deals with customers or coworkers is that you’re allowed to be mad if you’re the customer, but no one else can be angry or irrational. And that sucks. It is just an awful situation. As a professional, you have to sit there and take abuse, try to explain things calmly, and keep a level head. You have to be empathetic toward’s the customer’s plight, even if it’s their own fault for making some stupid mistake.

What I can’t stand then, is at the end of my week, when I’m at a Huddle House at 11:30 at night trying to get food with friends, a waitress who is not only incompetent, but is unapologetic about it. Several of my friends between two tables had switched seats, but my friend Ruff and I remained in our places, and we’re the only ones who didn’t get our food until the very, very last.

That’s because our incompetent waitress sent our food to a completely different table. Then when the people didn’t recognize the food, she left it on their table and said “Well, this has to be somebody’s food,” and after I and Ruff said several times “That’s our food,” she said “No, you’re table 9, this says table 10.” Eventually, everyone in our group of friends had gotten their food and eaten, and she came back around and looked at me and Ruff three times and said “What did you guys have?” and we told her, but didn’t get our food for at least 20 more minutes.

When it arrived, she brought me my meal but had given me hashbrowns instead of the grits and toast I had asked for. I didn’t complain, even though it had all been overcooked and rushed out, because if I sent it back I wouldn’t get my food still for another 20 minutes while she had it cooked and lost again.

I went to pay for my food, she asked what I had, and I said “Two egg breakfast with sausage, grits and toast,” and I swear to you, she said “Did you have fries with that?” I of course answered “No,” and looked at her with disdain. Then she accused me saying “You had hashbrowns!” and I told her I didn’t order hashbrowns, but she had brought them to me anyway and I wasn’t about to ask her to fix it, for reasons stated above. She started to add to the $4.49 total and I said “Here, this is what I’m going to do, because I’m pretty frustrated with you. I’m going to give you $5, you’re going to keep the change, but you’re not getting a tip, because this is unacceptable,” and I walked away. One of the other customers (I think it was the one who got my food the first time) clapped loudly. While I was talking to my friends back at the table, she came up behind me and slammed my change down on the table and said “Sorry about the confusion. Here’s your change!” and stormed off.

It all worked out alright though - we left and drove back to my place. I fell asleep in the living room on the couch watching TV with Kylara. We had caught up on Heroes and then Firefly was on, and that’s about all I remember before passing out. I’ve been exhausted all this week and I really needed to sleep. Today I woke up around noon, made some sausage biscuits, and just relaxed in front of the TV. I wish the weekend were longer, but I will enjoy it while it’s here.

In Search of Sanity

Seriously folks, I can’t wait until the 21st of December. That is the very last day of work before a week-long paid vacation for Christmas. I’m going to go home and see my mom and dad and sister, relax, enjoy not doing anything (except maybe taking care of my mom) and sit on my butt.

A whole week without students howling, faculty and staff complaining, worrying about server outages or system upgrades breaking things, processes, change management, or Vista application testing will be absolutely wonderful.

It’s a 5 and 1/2 hour drive to where my parents live, but it’s a scenic drive for most of the way, so it’s not too terrible. I’m usually a wreck after I’ve driven the trip home and will pass out on the nearest soft furniture I can find after a couple hours unwinding.

I’m anxious to see my mom - she just had some life-altering surgery this past week. No, she’s still a woman. She is just going to be a much skinnier woman in the upcoming months. And hopefully, healthier too. I am such a nerd - I read up on the type of surgery she had done on Wikipedia, so that I would know exactly what they would do and what complications could arrive and the mortality rates from complications during and after surgery. I was relieved to know it was like .009 percent of patients that die during the surgery (so maybe 1 person out of all of them died?) and a not much bigger percent from complications later.

I got my family cool Christmas presents! I kept wanting to post them here, but my Mom reads this blog, so I’ll have to post it after Christmas.

Writer’s Strike

December 4th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in tv

You know what really grinds my gears? This screen writer’s union going on strike thing. I know they’re lobbying for more money and to get royalties off all these shows that are being played over and over again in syndication. But it’s seriously cramping my tv-viewing style. I hope the networks and studios realize they need to pay these folks so my shows can get back to being new again.

The other weekend I saw that Saturday Night Live was a re-run from the 70’s with Bill Murray still on it! That was actually pretty cool, but I still missed the live show. Apparently their still was a live show in the studio, but they couldn’t televise it, and a lot of people were upset because they wanted to see the band that was supposed to be on that week.

So far, I’ve seen Heroes end semi-early, House is on hiatus until January, and a few other shows are done now. This all still reminds me of the last two years when my favorite shows just went on hiatus because they felt like it.

Okay, so maybe it’s not a big deal, we have lots of dvd’s around here, and other shows that have already been taped like “Little People, Big World.” I swear, midgets are awesome to watch on TV. Way better than that show where that couple has like 8 kids to take care of. Way better.

Holiday Gift Ideas

I’ve got a few top picks for gift ideas this holiday season, and because this is my blog and there’s not a darn thing you can do about it, I’m going to share them with you!

Everyone loves a time-tested favorite, and they’re usually the safe way to go when you’ve got someone you’re unsure what to get. You might want to avoid cliche gifts that the person has expressed time and time again that they despise. For example, fruit cake. I hate fruit cake, so please don’t get me any. I enjoy cologne, socks, dress clothes for work, gift cards, and cash from the people who don’t know what I want. For a woman, you might try similar items (maybe perfume instead of cologne) because most of those are pretty unisex. Be careful that your gifts don’t portray an offensive message: for example, if you know someone with a weight problem, don’t buy them Slim Fast.

Gift baskets are an excellent way to be a safe gift-giver and a customized gift basket can show thoughtfulness. The basket can be filled with gourmet foods, baby items, items with a theme such as items from Texas. You could get gift baskets with men’s items or Christmas gift baskets for women. A personal favorite of mine would be a basket full of chocolate stuff, but since I’m diabetic, it has to be sugar-free chocolate.

For those closer to you, you probably already know when they drop hints if they are eye-balling something special. This season’s holiday hits will likely include: The new Verizon  LGVX 10000 iPhone-wannabe phone, Apple iPod Touch, Apple iPhone, the new iMac, HD-DVD players, X-Box 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii & DS Lite, HDTVs, and the usual huge assortment of digital cameras and mp3 players.

When you go out shopping, check sites like Google Product Search to try and get the best prices. Do your research online, find the best price, and then go out to the store and see the item in person before you purchase online.

On TVs

November 27th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, tv

So, I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I have a pretty big TV. Fifty-five inches of Hitachi HDTV goodness. I had been eyeing it online at Circuit City for a few months when all of the sudden, it drops $500 in price over Memorial Day weekend, so I snatched it up on my store card.

If you’re in the market for a new TV, you should check out Krillion.com (maybe scope out a nice sony 46inch LCD). In today’s electronics market, it’s hard to know what’s what, and how to get the best bang for your buck. This site will help you research the latest TVs, and link you up with who carries them locally. That way, if you’re not confident enough to just pick one out online and have it shipped, you can go see what it looks like in the store, and either buy it there or go back to the internet and find it cheap.

Krillion, founded in February 2007, is located in Mountain View, CA and is funded by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners.

Peace in the Media Services

October 25th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Mediacom, My Life, Nintendo, Verizon, cable, dsl, satellite, tv, wii

Finally — it’s October, almost 8 months since we started having serious issues with Mediacom at our new place. For the uninitiated — we had problems with our cable company, Mediacom, where we couldn’t watch our TV and use the internet at the same time. We were finally told the only way to obtain the quality of service we were expecting was to get a second line put in to the house.  We ditched their TV service and switched to Dish Network with an awesome HD package and a DVR (sort of like a TiVo). When we did that, we tried to get Verizon DSL, but failed. So we went back to cable internet. And we only had it for about three days before it died. Completely. The wait time to get a tech out to fix it? 6 weeks. Completely unacceptable! Eventually, we were able to cancel our cable and get the DSL.  I haven’t looked back for a moment with any regret.

Now we have silly “problems,” like trying to manage the space on our measly 250 gig DVR by deciding what shows get to stay, and which ones have to go. I’ve been recording Star Trek: Enterprise in HD, which comes on everyday, multiple times a day. But I’m watching them and deleting them to free up space. I did figure out I can just protect what I don’t want it to overwrite and it will automatically delete unprotected things to make room.

Our DSL is fast, and I haven’t had any problems with it (knock on wood) and zero days of downtime! They don’t seem to throttle our bandwidth when we push its limits with BitTorrent downloads, and there aren’t many ports blocked off. We opted for the wireless DSL router, which saved any sort of configuration hassle to get it up and running. We can even connect to it with our Nintendo DS handhelds and play people online in Mario Kart! The Wii also connects to it, which is cool because it lets us play YouTube videos on the big screen.

I went over to my friend Nathan’s last night. He had purchased an HD-DVD player and twelve HD-DVDs (I presume on credit; that’s a heck of a lot to shell out at once). We watched “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and “Scorpion King” on his roommate’s 61″ plasma tv with some sort of awesome surround sound system.  I say I’m impressed, because I am, but probably less so than I would be if I didn’t own my own big screen with HD satellite programming.

All in all, it’s nice to have all that, even if it is just “stuff.”
