Certifications can Boost Your Hireability

This is a no brainer, but if you’re struggling out there in the job market, try to get some certifications. You may find that your field experience or self-research and training qualify you for a certification already. Or, you may learn something new by studying a “For Dummies” or exam prep guide.

Currently, I hold two Microsoft certifications - Microsoft Certified Professional, and Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. These are great, but hardly enough on their own to get an awesome job. That’s why one of the things I am for sure doing with some of my inheritance money is getting my Apple Desktop Support certification and a Vista upgrade to my Microsoft certifications. Then I’ll probably get my A+ and start looking into a Cisco cert of some sort.

Cisco certs are neat, because that’s where the REALLY big bucks are at. You can go almost anywhere you want with the right Cisco certification. Why? Because nearly every enterprise-class network has Cisco hardware somewhere - either in their network infrastructure, or their phone systems, or somewhere in their data centers.

Cisco has certifications that can lead into any of these career paths, and even if the company you go to work for doesn’t have Cisco-brand equipment, they look highly on the certification during the hiring process. These certs aren’t cheap, but they’re well worth the investment in your time and equipment.

Getting your Cisco certification is fairly straightforward though, you just start at their website and begin researching the first level, the associate certification (or CCNA).

By itself, the CCNA is plenty to get you a good job. Like you’d expect though, a higher level certification gives you better chances and better money. The next levels are going to be even harder though, and you’ll want to find yourself some access to Cisco equipment so you can practice and train for your exam. Usually if you have a job where you can use your CCNA, you’ll have higher-level staff who can help you with that, though.

So Cute, Your Head ‘Asplode.

July 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in LOLCats

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s “Hump Day” (Five people in your immediate vacinity are pregnant already! I kid, I kid.) and you’re probably pining for the weekend. Usually by Wednesday you’ve heard at least one person say “Why can’t we work two days a week and have weekends for five days a week?” or “Man, I can’t wait until Friday,” or “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” or “Would you please stop touching me there? It’s inappropriate.”

Here once again to help ease your troubled midweek brain, is something cute to make it ‘asplode:

Alzheimer’s Hurts More than Alzheimer’s Patients

July 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Health, Lifestyle, Tidbits

My great grandpa had Alzheimer’s disease - the most commonly known symptom of which is recent memory loss. A lot of times an Alzheimer’s patient can remember 50 years ago like it was yesterday (and sometimes they think it is yesterday), but yesterday is just a blurry memory. It can be very simple at first, and really bad once it progresses and leads to eventual death.

Having a loved one not recognize you anymore is one of the most sad things you can experience in life. It’s sad for the person who can’t remember, and sad for the one whose name they can’t recall. But they know you love them, usually that feeling is strong enough they at least know that. It’s hard on a family. My dad didn’t have Alzheimer’s, but his condition often left him disoriented in a similar fashion. My great grandpa did have Alzheimer’s, and that was hell on his daughter - my grandma.

The Alzheimer’s Association is having a Alzheimer’s Memory Walk to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s patient care and research. There are over 600 communities having walks already. It’s typically a 2-3 mile walk on a Saturday morning sometime in the fall. There is a great need for team captains to help organize and raise funds.

I’m asking all of my readers to take some time out of your schedule to see if there’s a walk in your community, and if not, see what it takes to start one. I’m sure you know plenty of people that have legs and can walk, and if not, I’m sure they accept people who can’t walk too.

Two Days to Pay Day

July 28th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Daily Life, Lifestyle, My Life, financing

Man, this month stung pretty hard financially speaking. I had to pay for a $300 appraisal on this house I’m living in. I had to pay rent weekly to Marq & Melissa while waiting to close on the house. I had to pay for a U-Haul and supplies for cleaning / moving out of the old house (including buying food to feed my friends that came to help). I bought gas for many trips back and forth between the old house and new.

I know I was eating out more times than I care to think about (foolish thing to correct this coming month). One of the people I lived with in Virginia wanted me to pay off an old debt I’d forgotten about before he would sign one of the papers saying I lived with him, which I needed to get the house. Regular bills, and random items for the new house that I needed like a cheap set of pots and pans and paper products also ate into my paycheck.

There’s probably more stuff I paid for, I just know my bank account is sitting at literal pennies right now.

God is so good though, because I got money from working on computers on the side, and the last of my PayPal money from blog sponsors kept me in the black. I even got some work from my realtor (Thanks Mona & Leslie!)

Thursday is pay day; I only wish it were sooner! Kylara’s birthday is around the corner, and I need to decide what she’s getting for her birthday present. I also want to get the kittens some cat toys, and buy the book I need for class, and pay for the class. I also could use some groceries, the cupboard is kinda bare right now. I’m not starving, don’t worry (Mom). August is going to be easier, because no rent or mortgage to pay, but that just means I need to adjust to being more frugal and try to leave some extra for next month. Plus, an inheritance check is coming my way, and that should mean new Apple stuff and some debt paid off completely!

Find a Better Deal on Web Hosting

While I’m pretty happy with my web host, Dream Host, you may not be happy with where your web site or blog are currently located. Perhaps you’ve seen banner ads and pop-ups and other forms of advertising at your favorite blog that has a deal you find more than tempting?

There’s more than a plethora of web hosts out there for your web site or blog or forum or whatever you might use your corner of the web to publish. With all the options, competition is high and prices keep dropping. But are you really getting a good deal?

Busy people, especially small businesses or entrepreneurs, don’t have time to shop around for a good web host. In fact, many may fall into the trap of paying too much for a cookie-cutter web page that barely stands out from the rest in their trade.

So what’s a reasonable person to do? Spend hours and hours doing research? You don’t have to - there are plenty of people who have gone before you and done the leg work. Web Hosting Geeks is one such web hosting comparison site that can help you make the right decision.

The thing I like best about Web Hosting Geeks’ site is that it immediately takes you to a bare-bones comparison of the most simple kind of web hosting with ratings and features. If you want to get into more features and complicated options, they have categories of web hosts you can look into. It’s an easy way to find cheap web hosting that fits your needs.
