Reach Out and Touch Someone [Insert Sexual Harassment Claim Here]

Is it just me, or is the majority of America starting to become more and more disconnected from a place they might consider “home?” Busy business people often pick up and move from one city to another across the continent for a better life, without much regard for the town they live in.

Is this a lack of hometown pride, or is the age of information making the world a smaller and smaller place? With computers, Voice-over-IP phone systems, instant messaging, text messaging, cellular phones, web cams, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs - it’s like you never left home to begin with.

For those of you with relatives who are less technically savvy, you can purchase phone cards and mail them to them so they can call you on your dime. A phone card will let them call a toll-free number, enter an access code, and then commence a call to you or whoever from a balance of minutes usually pre-paid on the calling card account.

Phone Cards avenue sells such phone cards, and can provide them to you at up to 80% less than regular long distance providers like the Bells or AT&T or Sprint. They also sell international phone cards, which is a big deal if, for example, you’re a foreign exchange student attending a university in the United States.

Or maybe if you’re about to go on a trip overseas, you can purchase phone cards that you can use from over there to call home to your family. This comes in handy as most cell phone providers charge a huge premium to call internationally.

Finally, phone cards are a great alternative when computers aren’t available and you can’t use a service like Skype to communicate internationally, or if, like I said before, your call recipient is less technically capable than most.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, why not send Mom a phone card, so that she can call you without paying for it. I’m sure she’d love the gift of hearing your voice if a visit is something not in the cards this particular holiday.

Holiday Alert: Mother’s Day is Upon Us

Mother’s Day in the United States is May 11th, 2008, and it’s fast approaching. There are lots of people who will be posting “Top 10 gifts” lists and their own opinions on what you should or shouldn’t give your Mother for Mother’s Day. There will be plenty of articles on giving “green” or environmentally friendly gifts. And rest assured, there will be plenty of sappy commercials on TV from jewelry stores.

If you’re undecided, give your mom a hug, a smile, an “I love you” and maybe some flowers this mother’s day.

For my mom, I’m planning on sending her some online love or a phone call the day of - and then later when I can come home for the weekend I might take her out to dinner or do some other nice thing for her. I’m not really sure yet. Because of the distance away that I live from my family, it’s hard to get home for things on specific dates other than major holidays (Christmas & Easter & Thanksgiving).

If you’re still stuck on what to do, visit 1800Flowers.com and check out their Mother’s Day gift ideas - they’re more than just flowers, they have an assortment of gifts and accessories.

Vacation Season: Rent a Car

Rental cars take a lot of abuse! People always think that just because it’s not their car, they don’t have to live with it in the future, so why take care of it? Especially if they purchase that rental insurance at check out time. Renting a car should be considered a means to an end. It should be something to get you from A to B while you’re away from your own car.

Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t rent something nice and enjoy yourself, if you do have to rent a car. In fact, you should not only get something nice, but you shouldn’t pay a lot for it either. Always do your homework and shop online for your rental when planning your vacation, and plan way ahead to get just the car you want.

Advantage car rental is not only a website where you can preview their cars available, you can also manage every aspect of your car rental from the web. You can check rates, make reservations, see if they have locations near you and / or your destination, and there’s even a frequent renters program.

Their website details what discounts and specials are going on now, so check that out if you’re planning on going somewhere and need to rent a car.

Got a Case of the Mondays? Tell Me About It!

April 28th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Daily Life, Lifestyle, My Life, Tidbits

Monday mornings are never fun. I can’t remember once waking up at my usual 6:42 a.m., rolling over and instead of hitting the snooze button saying “I’m so excited it’s Monday!” (at least on a work day, anyway). I know I’m excited on Mondays that fall on holidays or vacation days.

What is it about Monday mornings that seem to drag the life out of you? The rest of the week isn’t so bad, at least to me - some of you may have different tales to tell. I find it’s especially bad if I’ve had a great weekend with friends, or have something to look forward to at the end of the week that just began.

Tell me what gets you through your Monday morning blues, whether it’s coffee or your favorite radio station or reading my blog (*wink wink say no more*) that gets you through, in the comments below.

The British Invasion, Redux

Let’s face it. The British are pretty cool. They gave us great television like Dr. Who, Rome, and actors like Hugh Laurie. They gave us cool music like the Beatles. They gave us cool clothing, movies, cars, spy movie characters like James Bond, and so much more.

They even take the razzing we give them about winning our independence so many years ago. But it seems all that is behind us these days, and now we all get along pretty well. So well, in fact, that we consider going to visit them a vacation! And now, so do they!

There’s a great travel company that I’ve written about before, Dialaflight, and they have tons of travel information about just about anywhere you’d care to take your holiday. Book your flight, hotel, car rental, weekend getaway, spas, resorts, rounds of golf, and more.

So I’m inviting all you Brits out there to go to their website and check out Flights to USA, and come visit our fair land! See the historical sites where battles were won and lost. Visit museums, fine dining establishments like Hooters, or take in an American football game. You could even drop in and see me for a cup of tea!
