New Venture: ‘Tech Jaws’ Technology News Site

As I’ve been hinting at the last few days, and those of you following me on Twitter already know, I’m working with Frank J on a new tech news web site, Tech Jaws. It’s got an aggressive tone with a focus on the bleeding-edge of technology reviews, news, and tips.

This morning I posted an article reviewing the Logitech Harmony One universal remote control. This remote is simply awesome! Head on over to Tech Jaws and check out my review - complete with screenshots of the software and photos of the remote itself.

Also, feel free to comment - and when you do, mention you came there from my blog!

Make Headers Stay Across Pages on Tables in Word

A quick Microsoft Word tip: if you’re working with a table you’ve created in Word, and your table spans multiple pages, it can be annoying to flip back and forth to remember what each column represents. Ideally, you’d like to be able to keep the column headers on the table in Word across each page, much like splitting a worksheet in Excel.

Here’s how that works in Office 2003:

  1. Highlight the first row of your table, or whichever row contains your headers.
  2. Right-click on one of the highlighted cells.
  3. Select “Table Properties.”
  4. Select the “Row” tab.
  5. Check “Repeat as header row at the top of each page.”
  6. Click OK.

Now, each page your table spans should have your headers conveniently located at the top of the page.

What Tech Are You Packing?

Every tried-and-true geek has their own particular “rig” or powerhouse machine of which they’re proud. While I recently sold my Mac Mini for some spare cash and am currently “rigless,” I’ve had some pretty sweet setups in the past. Since I don’t have my own, I’ll go ahead and give the low-down on the specs of the machine I’m writing this from, and some of my other technology.

  • Gateway M465 laptop - 2 Ghz Intel Centrino 2 Duo, 1gb of RAM, 80 gb hard drive, dvd burner, bluetooth, wireless-G connectivity.
  • 19″ Widescreen DVI/VGA I-Inc monitor (it was on sale at Tiger Direct)
  • SiliconGraphics USB keyboard
  • Microsoft Wireless laptop mouse (I like the smaller mouse)
  • Phillips 2.1 sound system
  • 5th Gen iPod Video 30gb
  • Generic external 120gb hard drive
  • Canon Pixma 1800 Photo Printer
  • LG VX9900 (Verizon enV) phone (bluetooth for transferring pictures)

The most important thing for me about my setup is the small footprint, because I try to keep everything within the confines of my small computer desk at home, and the laptop belongs to my employer so it has to be easily removable and portable.

If you want to show off your rig, post your specs in the comments so other readers can “Oooh” and “Aaah” over your awesome system.
